Excellent talk by J.P.Rangaswami that makes a lot of interesting points.
As he says, “technology sometimes exists to speed up evolution”. He gives the example of Kevlar vests as a case where human skin couldn’t possibly have evolved to the extent that it could protect us from things like bullets in the time that it took to develop Kevlar.
Another useful quote:
When you think of technology and the reason for new technology principles to exist, before you even decide on the good and the bad, at least consider what was the stimulus that created it. Was it a perceived need, was it an observed effect or was it a wish to speed up evolution?
